A Chapel in the Woods

The walk begins at the Methodist Hall in Castle Court. It is a bit under 2 miles long. The terrain is easy but slightly uneven in places. There is one kissing gate out of Castle Court car park, which means the route is not accessible for wheelchairs.

We will begin by walking from the Methodist hall to Castle Court car park. We will then enter the Coppins Well field and descend towards the Poulter Brook and enter the woods to get a feel for being among trees. We follow the path through more woods to The Mundy playing fields, where there are more mature trees along the brook.

We will enter the Poulter Brook field to access a fragment of ancient semi natural woodland next to the golf course and then follow the top edge of the playing fields to access Kington Lane.

Taking care, we will walk to the newly refurbished chapel in the cemetery and look for arboreal forms in the chapel architecture.

Next we will look at the site of the proposed Memorial Woodland before walking along the brook towards St Mary’s Church. Here we will look at the trees surrounding the church and then we will enter the church to appreciate how the pillars reflect the forms of the tree trunks we have seen earlier.

We will then return along Castle Street looking out for interesting trees along the way, which include some impressive imports and a churchyard yew, which is older than the church next to it.
