Maps

Writing walking routes is fairly easy. The difficult bit seems to be adding maps.

I am currently using Komoot, which is fine until you try to put in a route across a public open space. The algorithm only recognises public rights of way so you get sent around the roads. I tried turning off Follow Ways, but that just gives you a generalised dotted line, which is unsatisfactory. Also, it doesn’t show all the definitive rights of way for some reason. It is very good in other respects – putting in heights and so on and grading routes intelligently. There must be a way of getting round this?

I notice that Thornbury Walkers uses Google Maps, which I tried. It worked for them, but I can’t make it follow public rights of way. It just goes off along the roads. I must be doing something wrong!

They also used OS Maps and Open Route Service. I have used O S maps in the past, but my account seems to have lapsed. I don’t know Open Route Service.

Has anyone out there got any advice?

I now use the OS maps app which has a very reasonable annual subscription. I also use Anquet (with OS maps) on my laptop for planning routes, but I can’t use it on my newer phone and they want me to pay again for newer software. I use Alltrails for recording tracks where you can attach photos.
