In 1228, the young king Henry III agreed to the disafforestation of the Forest of Horwood, a Royal Forest that spread from the Severn Shore in the west and the Cotswold Edge in the east and from the Bristol Avon in the south and the Little Avon in the north. This freed some local barons to fence off suitable areas of land as deer parks for their own exclusive enjoyment, and also enabled the development of Bristol as a port. The following walks allow us to explore some aspects of the ancient forest.
WARNING These walks have been published without maps and the bus services should be checked before you commit yourself to walking them. My main purpose in publishing them at this stage is to get the website into shape (in the absence of much experience!)
