Step into Spring – Walking Festival

Friday 20th February 2026

WALK 1 – QUILT WALK
Museum leaders will take us to Thornbury Town Hall to view “Mrs Chambers’ Quilt”, a unique, 125-year-old piece of local history. We will then walk along the High Street, discovering some of the people and buildings depicted on it and hearing their stories. Meet outside Thornbury Town Hall by the Millennium Sculpture.
Distance: 1 mile approximately, easy
Time: 10am to 12 noon. Wheelchair accessible.


WALK 2. – ALPACA WALK
A circular walk through fields and along tracks in the countryside south of Thornbury. We intend to get up close to some alpacas and enjoy some refreshments on the way. A moderate walk with some large stiles. Meet at the Leisure Centre car park.
Distance 6 miles Moderate
Time: walk starts 10.00 (3/3 ½ hrs.with coffee stop)


WALK 3 –AZTEC WESTWARD
The walk will visit Ponds, Pits and Plantations. It will also explore the mysterious relationship between Trains and Tumps and Planes on the walk back to
Thornbury. Lunch at the Swan in Tockington (bar snacks from £2.99. Ciabattas from £5.99) Distance 10 miles, Strenuous
Meet Rock Street South bus stop at 9.00 am to catch the 9.10 T1 bus arriving at the Willow Centre, Bradley Stoke at 9.31 (please bring bus fare or bus pass).
Walks starts at 9.45 from the Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre.

Saturday 21st February 2026

WALK 4 – TREE WALK
Identifying trees in winter can be challenging. This walk will explore useful clues to their identification while also showing how different species indicate the
town’s development, as the introduction and fashion of certain trees often reflects the history of the place in which they grow. Meet outside Thornbury Town Hall by the Millennium Sculpture.
Distance: 3 miles approx.. – easy
Time: 10.00- 11.30


WALK 5 – OVER THE TYTHERINGTON RIDGE
The walk will head off on the Jubilee Way to Itchington, then to Tytherington, up Baden Hill and back to Thornbury via the Hackett, Streamside Walk and
old Railway path. Led by Thornbury Ramblers. Meet at Leisure Centre car park.
Distance 7 miles, Moderate.
Mostly firm, muddy in parts and some stiles.
Time 10.00 to 2.00 p.m. so bring refreshments.


WALK 6 – SLOW WAY FROM DURSLEY
The walk begins by following the Cotswold Way past the Old Spot and over Stinchcombe Hill to Nibley. We then walk across the valley of the Little Avon River
and its tributaries to Falfield and over Eastwood Park to Thornbury.
Distance: 10 miles, strenuous
Time: Meet Rock Street North bus stop at 9.20 to catch the 9.35 no. 60 bus to Dursley May Lane. (please bring bus fare or bus pass) Walk starts there at 10.45.

Sunday 22nd February 2026

WALK 7 – RAILWAY WALK
This ever popular walk will be led by the Museum to investigate the historical
Thornbury & Yate branch of the Midland Railway.
Meet at the Midland Way side of Grovesend roundabout.
Distance: 3 miles – easy
Time: 10.30 – 12.30
Assistance dogs allowed.


WALK 8 – SIGNS OF SPRING WITH STEVE ENGLAND
Expert forager/environmentalist Steve England will be searching for the first signs
of spring – early flowers and insects – and if there’s any foraging to be done, Steve
will be sure to find it.
Distance: 4 miles – moderate
Time: 10.00 – 12.00 Meet Rock Street car park (free Sundays)


WALK 9 – TERMINALIS
This walk explores a Raven’s eye view of the eastern boundary of the parish of Thornbury, whose coat of arms is deconstructed in the image of the Raven in Honour of the Roman God of Boundaries. Bring your own libations. (We are actually a day early!)
Distance: 10 miles – strenuous
Time: Meet at Rock Street car park at 9.00 a.m. for a 9.15 start.
